How to tell if Moldavite is fake? What is Moldavite? Where did Moldavite come from?

The green rush

Moldavite is a forest green, olive green or blue greenish vitreous silica projectile rock formed by a meteorite impact in southern Germany (Nördlinger Ries Crater) that occurred about 15 million years ago, It is a type of tektite. Moldavite was introduced to the public for the first time in 1786 as "chrysolites" from Týn nad Vltavou in a lecture by Josef Mayer of Prague University, read at a meeting of the Bohemian Scientific Society (Mayer 1788). Zippe (1836) first used the term "Moldavite", derived from the Moldau (Vltava) river in Bohemia (the Czech Republic), from where the first described pieces came.

In the Czech Republic there is a village built around the site where 99% of all moldavite has been mined in the last 25 years or so. If you own an authentic piece it likely came from here. A few years ago, the village elders got together and decided to close off the dig site to the public. Miners and tourists were tearing up the land and wildlife with no regard causing permanent damage in some cases. By that time only a few small pieces were being found on average. Two of the elders decided they would continue to search and dig by hand as to not damage the land or its wildlife. At the end of 2020 they officially closed after not finding anymore moldavite for almost a year.

It was around this time that the moldavite popularity shot up, it was the talk of every social media platform. People were searching everywhere for a piece. There is no shortage of sellers, the problem is 99% of retailers are selling fake moldavite. To make matters worse the fakes have gotten so good even the best of us can’t tell them apart. Some Really good fakes are casted from a mold of a real piece of moldavite then color matched with special glass. These sellers then issue bogus certificates of authenticity to their unknowing customers.

All real moldavite from the original green rush has already been sold or found its perspective resting spot among collectors’ spaces. You can see many online stores claiming new shipments of moldavite, this is impossible, and you should never buy from such a place. A good rule of thumb is if its cheap its fake. The Current market value of real private reserve moldavite is approximately eighty U.S dollars a gram as of June 2022 and rising. This will rise to one hundred and fifty dollars a gram by 2023, especially for larger pieces.

Consequently, from all the craziness and scams going on surrounding motivate I have decided to take a limited amount of my private reserve pieces out of the vault and offer them to the public. As much as I love my Moldavite collection it bothers me to see so many people being ripped off. I hope these special pieces help whoever becomes their rightful owner. Although there will be a very limited amount and it will be first come first serve, I will include a signed legal certificate of authenticity affidavit.

Stay Vigilant Friends.
